Nalbari College was established in the year 1945 and was affiliated to the Calcutta University. After the establishment of the Gauhati University in 1948 it came under this University. It is one of the oldest and largest colleges in Assam. It was the only college for higher education in the whole area from Mangaldai to Bongaigaon. Beginning with a modest scale with only 28 students, the college today has student strength of about three thousand with Higher Secondary courses in both Arts & Science, T.D.C. Arts & Science courses with major in all subjects except Statistics and P.G. course in Assamese. The college is run under deficit system of grants under State Govt. and with regular grants from U.G.C.
Nalbari College is located in Japarkuchi village at a distance of one km. from Nalbari town. At present the college has many buildings to accommodate the students, two hostels – one for the boys and another for girls, residential quarters for 4th grade employees, canteen, playground, auditorium, P.G. building etc. in a total land area of 16.10 acres (appx.).
From its inception, Nalbari College has been successfully providing knowledge and higher learning, and has produced thousands of graduates, post graduates, teachers, scholars of national reorganization. Alumni of this college have attained significant position in the field of education, literature, govt. & non-govt. organization, P.S.U’s, art & culture, political administration, business and in the field of science & technology. More than 80% of the school and college teachers of Nalbari and surrounding districts are alumni of this college. Nalbari College is now preparing itself to meet the future challenges in education in the 21st century and as a part of its preparation has initiated several developmental and innovative plans. In order to identify the strengths and weaknesses, Nalbari College has been offered the B+ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
Nalbari College has hitherto taken a pioneering role in promoting higher education in the entire North Bank of Brahmaputra since its establishment. Under the Principalship of the renowned educationist and literatuer late T.N. Goswami. the students from various parts of undivided Assam came to study at Nalbari College and showed proficiency in study. Students from our college have shown brilliant results in various departments of Gauhati University. Nalbari College has produced best graduates of the University many times and they have brought name and fame to the University in various departments.

Nalbari College: A historical perspective
An institution of higher learning was a long – cherished dream of the people of Nalbari. The dream became a reality on 4th July 1945, when Nalbari College was founded, more than two years before our country attained independence. In the mean time Nalbari College has completed more that half a century of its glorious life and undergone a lot of expansion and changes. One significance change was the introduction of science stream in 1958. Now the College has 15 full –fledged departments and imparts teaching 14 major subjects at degree level. Besides PG classes in Assamese affiliated to Gauhati University, have been introduced in the College. Moreover the consistently good academic performances have raised Nalbari College to premier institution of higher learning which has contributed remarkably towards the educational and cultural prosperity of the state.
ADMISSION:
A student seeking admission in to the college should apply in the prescribed application form obtainable along with the prospectus from College office on payment of rupees 30 only. The prospectus and application form are issued immediately after the announcement of results of qualifying examinations. The dates for submission of application form, interview and admission are notified in the college notice boards.
A student must produce the entire relevant document in original and two copies of passport size photograph at the time of interview and admission. Attested copies certificates of proficiency in co-curricular activities, SC/ST/OBC certificates should be enclosed along with the application form. Admission in to the college is strictly in order of merit and is governed by college admission rules. There is provision for reservation of seats for students belonging to SC/ST(P)/ST(H)/OBC categorize as per the Government rules.
The students selected must get themselves admitted on the very first day of interview of their claims for admission for admission will be fortified.
Admission in to the college hostels takes place on the same day. For this purpose a separate application in a prescribed form should be submitted to the concerned hostel superintendents.
The selection of students seeking major course in different subjects will be made on the day of interview on the basis of merit.
SHIFTS:
Classes of the college are held in two shifts Morning and Day. Morning shifts starts from 7.00A.M. and Day shifts, 9.00 A.M.. Students of Morning shift are not allowed to offer in major subjects.
The college has one Girls Hostel and one boy’s Hostel in the campus. Hostel seats are allotted at the time of admission on the basis of merit. Application for Hostel is to be made to the Hostel superintendents in the prescribed form. Every boarder must observe the Hostel Rules strictly. Violation of these rules may cause expulsion. Boarders are allowed to meet the visitors on the visiting day during visiting hours only.
LIBRARY:
The college has a big library with a good collection of text and reference books and journals. A student of H.S./T.D.C. (G) can borrow two books at a time for a specified period after deposition necessary caution money. A student of Major & P.G. course can borrow four books at a time. A borrower is personally responsible for loss or damage for books borrowed.
Besides this, all departments have departmental Seminar libraries providing immense help to students in their academic pursuits.
EXAMINATION AND ATTENDANCE:
In case of H.S. course the first year examination is held at the end of first year course, and H.S. final examination at the end of the second year course. These examination are conducted by AHSEC. A student must pass the first year examination for promotion to the second year class. The result of both the examination are declared by the council. The Terminal/ Preparatory and Annual Examination are conducted by the college. All the students are to appear in all the examinations which are conducted by the college authority during the academic year.
As per Assam Higher Secondary Education Council and Gauhati University rules 75% attendance in class is essential to be a regular candidate. For college examination the required attendance is 60%.
Academic SESSION
The academic session of the college usually begins in July-August with Autumn Recess in September-October, and Summer Recess in May-June.
In general the medium of instruction up to degree course is Assamese. But the medium of instruction in Major subjects is English except Assamese major course.

5) A student passing H.S. (Science) can take Arts subject including Major.
6) A student can take Geography in TDC directly.
